DANA POINT, Calif. (Sept. 29, 2009) - The 21st Annual Jack’s Newport Beach Surf Championship hosted by The City of Newport Beach took over the legendary 56th Street beach break this past weekend as 160 amateur surfers took to the water to showcase their skills and become local icons.

This annual Surf Championship is an opportunity for the City and local vendors to give back to the loyal Newport surfing community in a fun, yet competitive environment for surfers of all ages and abilities. Competing divisions included: Elementary (11 & under), Middle School (12-14), High School (15-18), Open Mens’ (19 & up), Masters’ (30 & up), Legends’ (40 & up), and Open Girls’ (All ages).

“Newport Beach is full of surfing enthusiasts,” says Darren Brilhart, Contest Director. “And the Jack’s Newport Beach Surf Championship was designed specifically for them; whether they’re kids with WCT dreams, veterans showing the young guns how it’s done, or friends and family supporting their surfers from the shore, the Jack’s Newport Beach Championship has something for everyone and this year was no exception.” In fact, the level of surfing was at an all time high this year with impressive surfing seen across all the divisions and young standouts like Tyler Gunter, winner of the Elementary Division, and Meah Collins, winner of the Open Girls’ division, demonstrating real promise for the future of surfing.

A fun mix of S-SSW swells provided shoulder-to-head high sets all weekend long supplying competitors with a pristine canvas on which to display their athletic artistry. Erik Heimstaed and Shea Perkins from the Open Mens’ division and Marc Belmonte from the Masters’ division, among others took full advantage of the pumping surf and put on quite a display for the judges and spectators alike.

In addition to local pride, surfers were also competing for a collection of prizes valued at $5,000 compliments of Jack’s, Oakley, and other participating sponsors. These prizes were awarded to first through sixth place finishers in all divisions.
